The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA)® today announced the 30 percent growth of the digital fitness footprint at the 2014 International CES®, the world’s gathering place for all who thrive on the business of consumer technologies. The 2014 CES will run January 7-10, 2014 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

According to CEA’s semi-annual report, the market for fitness technology is predicted to grow nearly 25 percent in 2014. FitnessTech will feature hundreds of products, services and solutions that use technology to make workouts and outdoor activities fun, safe and effective.

Major FitnessTech exhibitors include: Fitbit, GeoPalz, Jaybird, Looxcie, Polar and Wahoo Fitness. The TechZone will be located in the South Hall of the Las Vegas Convention and World Trade Center (LVCC).

Best of Digital Health #2013CES: @MIOwatch

IO, maker of the world’s first strapless heart rate monitor watches, showcased the  MIO ALPHA during the 2013 International CES.

The world’s first continuous heart rate monitor sport watch that accurately records heart rate continuously without a chest strap, even at performance speeds up to 12 mph.

Originally launched as a Kickstarter project in June of this year, the ALPHA garnered rapid, overwhelming support, surpassing its initial $100,000 goal in just a few days and racking up more than 1,300+ backers, 2,000+ units pre-sold and more than $320,000 in sales during the six-week campaign. This early success landed the MIO ALPHA on the pages of Runner’s World magazine, Triathlete.com, RunningwithToys.com and Competitor.com, as well as TechCrunch.

Designed for runners and cyclists who want to track their heart rate but don’t want to wear an uncomfortable chest strap, ALPHA’s intuitive two-button functionality is simple to use and provides easy access to workout timers, continuous heart rate display, and both at-a-glance and audible heart rate zone alerts for optimum workout efficiency and effectiveness. ALPHA also tracks last-run statistics including total run time, average heart rate and time spent “in zone” for target heart rate.

A built-in Bluetooth® Smart transmitter feeds real-time data from ALPHA directly into iPhone and Android apps to track and graph performance data over time. With all the “heavy lifting” of data collection and analysis conducted on the smartphone, the ALPHA maintains a simple and sleek interface that makes measuring workout effectiveness fast and easy.

ALPHA’s advanced electro-optical sensors detect blood volume in the wrist as it pulsates with the rhythm of the heart. An onboard motion detector and built-in noise filtration software compensate for the natural arm movement of walking or running that typically interferes with the signal in most other similar devices. By virtue of its advanced industrial design and sensor engineering, ALPHA displays and records accurate heart rate even during motion-intense activities.

We got a quick demo from the CES floor.

MIO ALPHA comes with a USB charging dock and its rechargeable lithium polymer battery lasts up to 18 hours in use. Available just in time for the holiday shopping season, ALPHA is the perfect gift for fitness and running enthusiasts at an MSRP of $199. Visit www.alphaheartrate.com.

Best of Digital Health #2013CES : Smart Body Analyzer by Withings

During  the 2013 International CES, Withings unveiled its Smart Body Analyzer, the first-ever smartscale to feature heart rate measurement and air quality monitoring along traditional weight and body fat measurements. Awarded with a 2013 CES Innovations Award, this new device from Withings provides people with a unique opportunity to shift towards a healthier lifestyle and environment.

Withings, creators of the first Internet connected scale, announces today its Smart Body Analyzer- the first smart scale to monitor health and environment through heart rate measurement and air quality monitoring, in addition to rich weight analysis in order to achieve a healthier lifestyle. This breakthrough health-monitoring device awarded with a 2013 CES Innovation Award, combines wireless connectivity, over Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, with unprecedented body analysis capabilities.
By simply stepping on the scale, the Smart Body Analyzer provides users with a quick and comprehensive health snapshot that shows highly accurate weight, body fat & heart rate readings.  With the addition of heart rate measurement, users can monitor the evolution of their resting heart rate, a powerful indicator of their overall fitness level. The readings are then transmitted to the Withings Health Mate mobile application via the built-in internet connection.  The results are stored and can be shared with a physician, dietitian  support group or motivational team via Twitter or Facebook.
Designed to be placed in a user’s bedroom, the Smart Body Analyzer can also monitor the air quality of its surrounding environment through temperature and carbon dioxide (CO2) metering.  Carbon dioxide is a gas formed by metabolic activity that builds up to excessive levels in confined spaces, like bedrooms, when an insufficient amount of fresh air is being delivered.  High levels of CO2 can produce a variety of health effects that can affect sleep, like headaches, dizziness, restlessness, difficulty breathing, increased heart rate and sweating.  By monitoring and managing indoor air quality, people can live and sleep in a healthier environment.

Key features of the Smart Body Analyzer include:
  • Position Control™ technology: best-in-class weighing technology to insure accuracy
  • Fat mass measurement: available in athlete and non-athlete modes
  • Heart rate measurement: this feature is for the first time introduced on a scale, and allows tracking of the resting heart rate while just stepping on a scale. Like all other measurements, heart rate readings are automatically transmitted and rendered on the Withings Health Mate mobile app
  • Air quality measurement: CO2 and temperature monitoring to better monitor and manage the bedroom air quality
  • Connectivity: Bluetooth, Bluetooth Smart and Wi-Fi for easy setup and hassle-free data upload
  • Unbeaten Battery life: four standard AAA alkaline batteries provide more than one year of daily measurements
The Smart Body Analyzer is slated for a Q1 2013 release date at a suggested retail price of $149.95.  For more information, visit http://www.withings.com/bodyanalyzer/

I got a quick demo from the convention floor, take a look.

Best of Digital Health #2013CES: FitBug

Of all of the sensors on display during the 2013 International CES show.  Fitbug certainly stood out as one to watch.

During CES, Fitbug launched the Fitug Orb. Fitbug Orb is a discreet button-sized Bluetooth Smart Fitbug device that tracks and syncs both activity and sleep with Fitbug's most comprehensive online health and wellness program - and that can be worn in seven different ways - making it even easier for users to stay on track of their health and wellness.

Fitbug introduced Bluetooth last year to its devices to allow Fitbug users to send their data in real-time to the Fitbug mobile app, available on Bluetooth Smart Ready devices. These include the iPhone 5, iPhone 4S, iPod Touch (5th generation), iPad (3rd and 4th generation), and iPad Mini, and will include Samsung SIII Android connectivity.

Fitbug Orb with phobeThe Orb benefits from this smartphone-friendly technology and allows users to sync their stats on-the-go in three ways: Push, Beacon and Stream.

(1) Push: send data from the Orb to theFitbug app in an instant.

(2) Beacon: set up Beaconing mode using the side button to send data at certain intervals throughout the day to the Fitbug app.

(3) Stream: set Orb to streaming mode to view data and take advantage of the 'Walking Zone' feature on the Fitbugapp, a mode that ensures the right pace is kept for the best health benefits.

The Orb is also the first Fitbug device to introduce a sleep tracker to help people monitor the quality and quantity of their sleep.

By interpreting the amount of body movement throughout the night, the tracker reveals how much deep sleep was achieved and points out any periods of wakefulness. Fitbug included the sleep tracker as a response to their users' inquiries and the latest research, which has linked a lack of sleep and tiredness to cravings for sugary foods because when tired, the body seeks sugar. Too little sleep can also hamper the 'body repair' benefits of good quality sleep. In this way, the sleep tracking feature of the Orb, which can be comfortably worn all night using the wrist sleep pouch, aids the user's journey to health.

When combined with the highly accurate 3-axis accelerometer employed by the Orb, these features offer users the ability to record with precision every step taken, calorie burned, distance covered, walking pace, and sleep efficiency with Fitbug's mobile app.

With the additional ability to send stats in real time, Fitbug members are given all the tools they need to create an accurate picture of their "quantified self" and be motivated to gradually build realistic changes into their lives.

Historically, the data sent to the website from Fitbug's devices was used to set weekly personalized activity and eating targets, which adapt dynamically according to nutrition and activity data logged. Members can now send and view their data in real-time using the combination of the Fitbug Orb and app, resulting in immediate feedback and improved support. Users are also provided with weekly targets, games and challenges, recipes, simple food logging, and motivational support - all housed on the updated Fitbug site.

Fitbug Orb is priced at $49.99 and will be available from www.fitbug.com late spring. The Orb's base price includes three attachments - a Fitbug branded lanyard, key fob, and sleep pouch.

Fitbug Orb is the latest addition to the Fitbug family of Bluetooth 4.0-enabled devices, which includes the Fitbug Air, Fitbug Wow scale, and the Fitbug Luv blood pressure monitor.

See the Orb in action and hear my interview with Fitbug CEO, Paul Landau.
