During the 2013 International CES, Withingsunveiled its Smart Body Analyzer, the first-ever smartscale to feature heart rate measurement and air quality monitoring along traditional weight and body fat measurements. Awarded with a 2013 CES Innovations Award, this new device from Withings provides people with a unique opportunity to shift towards a healthier lifestyle and environment.
Withings, creators of the first Internet connected scale, announces today its Smart Body Analyzer- the first smart scale to monitor health and environment through heart rate measurement and air quality monitoring, in addition to rich weight analysis in order to achieve a healthier lifestyle. This breakthrough health-monitoring device awarded with a 2013 CES Innovation Award, combines wireless connectivity, over Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, with unprecedented body analysis capabilities.
By simply stepping on the scale, the Smart Body Analyzer provides users with a quick and comprehensive health snapshot that shows highly accurate weight, body fat & heart rate readings. With the addition of heart rate measurement, users can monitor the evolution of their resting heart rate, a powerful indicator of their overall fitness level. The readings are then transmitted to the Withings Health Mate mobile application via the built-in internet connection. The results are stored and can be shared with a physician, dietitian support group or motivational team via Twitter or Facebook.
Designed to be placed in a user’s bedroom, the Smart Body Analyzer can also monitor the air quality of its surrounding environment through temperature and carbon dioxide (CO2) metering. Carbon dioxide is a gas formed by metabolic activity that builds up to excessive levels in confined spaces, like bedrooms, when an insufficient amount of fresh air is being delivered. High levels of CO2 can produce a variety of health effects that can affect sleep, like headaches, dizziness, restlessness, difficulty breathing, increased heart rate and sweating. By monitoring and managing indoor air quality, people can live and sleep in a healthier environment.
Key features of the Smart Body Analyzer include:
Position Control™ technology: best-in-class weighing technology to insure accuracy
Fat mass measurement: available in athlete and non-athlete modes
Heart rate measurement: this feature is for the first time introduced on a scale, and allows tracking of the resting heart rate while just stepping on a scale. Like all other measurements, heart rate readings are automatically transmitted and rendered on the Withings Health Mate mobile app
Air quality measurement: CO2 and temperature monitoring to better monitor and manage the bedroom air quality
Connectivity: Bluetooth, Bluetooth Smart and Wi-Fi for easy setup and hassle-free data upload
Unbeaten Battery life: four standard AAA alkaline batteries provide more than one year of daily measurements
The Smart Body Analyzer is slated for a Q1 2013 release date at a suggested retail price of $149.95. For more information, visit http://www.withings.com/bodyanalyzer/

Of all of the sensors on display during the 2013 International CES show. Fitbug certainly stood out as one to watch.
During CES, Fitbug launched the Fitug Orb. FitbugOrb is a discreet button-sized Bluetooth SmartFitbugdevice that tracks and syncs both activity and sleep withFitbug's most comprehensive online health and wellness program - and that can be worn in seven different ways - making it even easier for users to stay on track of their health and wellness.
Fitbug introduced Bluetooth last year to its devices to allow Fitbug users to send their data in real-time to the Fitbug mobile app, available on Bluetooth Smart Ready devices. These include the iPhone 5, iPhone 4S, iPod Touch (5th generation), iPad (3rd and 4th generation), and iPad Mini, and will include Samsung SIII Android connectivity.
The Orb benefits from this smartphone-friendly technology and allows users to sync their stats on-the-go in three ways: Push, Beacon and Stream.
(1) Push: send data from the Orb to theFitbug app in an instant.
(2) Beacon: set up Beaconing mode using the side button to send data at certain intervals throughout the day to the Fitbug app.
(3) Stream: set Orb to streaming mode to view data and take advantage of the 'Walking Zone' feature on the Fitbugapp, a mode that ensures the right pace is kept for the best health benefits.
The Orb is also the first Fitbug device to introduce a sleep tracker to help people monitor the quality and quantity of their sleep.
By interpreting the amount of body movement throughout the night, the tracker reveals how much deep sleep was achieved and points out any periods of wakefulness. Fitbug included the sleep tracker as a response to their users' inquiries and the latest research, which has linked a lack of sleep and tiredness to cravings for sugary foods because when tired, the body seeks sugar. Too little sleep can also hamper the 'body repair' benefits of good quality sleep. In this way, the sleep tracking feature of the Orb, which can be comfortably worn all night using the wrist sleep pouch, aids the user's journey to health.
When combined with the highly accurate 3-axis accelerometer employed by the Orb, these features offer users the ability to record with precision every step taken, calorie burned, distance covered, walking pace, and sleep efficiency with Fitbug's mobile app.
With the additional ability to send stats in real time, Fitbug members are given all the tools they need to create an accurate picture of their "quantified self" and be motivated to gradually build realistic changes into their lives.
Historically, the data sent to the website from Fitbug's devices was used to set weekly personalized activity and eating targets, which adapt dynamically according to nutrition and activity data logged. Members can now send and view their data in real-time using the combination of the Fitbug Orb and app, resulting in immediate feedback and improved support. Users are also provided with weekly targets, games and challenges, recipes, simple food logging, and motivational support - all housed on the updated Fitbug site.
FitbugOrb is priced at $49.99 and will be available fromwww.fitbug.comlate spring. The Orb's base price includes three attachments - aFitbugbranded lanyard, key fob, and sleep pouch.
Fitbug Orb is the latest addition to the Fitbug family of Bluetooth 4.0-enabled devices, which includes the Fitbug Air, Fitbug Wow scale, and the Fitbug Luv blood pressure monitor.
See the Orb in action and hear my interview with Fitbug CEO, Paul Landau.
During the 2013 International Consumer Electronics show in Las Vegas last week, Digital Health was clearly the hot topic and a space primed for game changing innovation.
We met some fantastic people and learned about some phenomenal products. You can see our 'Best of CES' posts and watch our video interviews with our favorite products.
One that didn't make our list was the Hapifork from Haplabs. Their press headline was. HAPIfork, the world’s first connected fork that helps you lose weight by eating at the right time and at the right pace. Most convention attendees we spoke to thought it was a novelty item. Others found as we did, a booth full of rude people, only wanting to talk or demo their product to the big news outlets. While bloggers and smaller media outlets didn't get the big interview, we still have an opportunity to talk about your product. It is this blogger's recommendation that you run don't walk past the Hapifork. You'll burn more calories. Take a look at the products we did like.
InteraXon, makers of cutting edge brainwave-enabled products and applications, showcased the latest brain sensing headband, Muse during the 2013 International CES.
Muse is a brain sensing headband that allows users to control applications ranging from gaming to education to memory training to music using the power of their brains.
It's a comfortable, sleek, four-sensor headband that allows you to control games, reduce stress, improve memory and concentration, and eventually to control devices directly with your mind. Muse measures your brainwaves in real-time. It sends those brainwaves to your smart phone or tablet showing you how well your brain is performing; and also translates your brainwaves into instructions to interact with content on your iOS or Android device. Take a look at a quick Demo from CES.

"Think of it as an expert guiding you through a process to better understanding a specific health topic, in this case Thyroid disease.“Then, helping you prepare to see your own personal doctor. We believe that the ThyroidApp and others we have coming down the pike, are fundamentally changing the way that you prepare for your doctor visits." David Clymer, CEO MyMedLab The ThyroidApp begins with a digital conversation with Mary by asking about the most common symptoms, family history, environmental exposure, various treatments, and radiation exposure. The answers to these questions produce a personal risk report which can be emailed and printed out as a starting point for the conversation at the next doctor’s visit. In addition to being a FREE mobile app for Android and Iphones, The ThyroidApp can be added to any blog or website.
